New portal, more prizes: CBSE boosts rewards program for teachers

To ensure recognition for deserving teachers, the CBSE has eased rules of application for the Teacher's Award 2018: it has increased the number of rewards from 34 to 48, and launched an online portal for the entire process.
The shortlisting procedure has also been centralized; earlier, it was the regional CBSE offices taking this decision.
Such steps would bring "transparency and objectivity," it said.

About CBSE's Teachers' Awards

The CBSE has been awarding outstanding teachers since 2000. Till last year, 34 teachers were chosen for the honor annually.
Awards are given out on September 5, celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.
Each award consists of a merit certificate, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.
Certain changes have been introduced this time "to make (the awards) more objective and transparent."

ConditionsTeachers need a minimum of 10 years' experience to apply

This time, there are five awards for principals and the rest for primary, secondary and senior secondary teachers.
For the first time, 10 awards out of 48 have been kept aside for special educators, performing arts, counselors, and teachers of vocational subjects, physical education and IT.
Teachers need to have at least 10 years of experience in CBSE-affiliated schools to apply.
